It's been a few years since we've gone on a real hike {not counting our urban hikes} so for Labor Day Weekend we decided to get out and go on an adventure. We've been talking about going up to Mount Baker to explore so after some quick crowdsourcing {thanks, Kami!} we decided to try out the Chain Lakes Loop Trail, a 7 mile loop with an 1800 feet elevation gain that promised gorgeous views and changing scenery. We got up bright and early for the drive from my parents house to the mountain and after chatting with the local guide at the Heather Meadows Visitor Center, we headed out clockwise to tackle this slightly intimidating loop. Though fog and clouds kept us from seeing any real views of Mount Baker or Mount Shuksan, we still were in awe of the sprawling forests, pristine lakes, and sharp cliffs that greeted us at every turn. While the trail was busy {it was a holiday weekend, after all} we were still able to enjoy moments of quiet with just the faint sounds of waterfalls and birds in the background. About 4 hours later, including a few stops for snacks and pictures, we made our way back up to the Visitor's Center feeling dusty, sweaty, and so proud of ourselves for completing a much longer hike that we had originally thought we'd do. I kept wanting to pinch myself that something this majestic was just a few hours away from us and I can't wait to go up there again when we can see the mountains - and maybe even camp overnight? :) Such a fun day that I won't soon forget!
