Happy Birthday to Me!

Happy Birthday to me! We celebrated early yesterday with some pre-birthday ice cream and I’m excited for a very low key day today of relaxing and doing a lot of nothing. That’s what birthdays are all about, right? Cheers to the last year of my 30’s - I think it’s gonna be a good one! :)

Date Night {The Walrus & The Carpenter}

Christian and I have a bad habit of promising each other celebration dinners and never following through, so after several job changes and a pretty big engagement over the last several years, we finally decided to take each other out to The Walrus & The Carpenter for date night on Saturday and celebrate all of the things.  We got to Ballard early and wandered around, then at 3:45 decided to head over to the restaurant where a large line was already forming down the hall.  Luckily we were able to snag some bar seats when they opened at 4 and immediately ordered yummy cocktails to start.  Since we hadn't had oysters in forever {years maybe} we decided to get 2 each of the 9 they had on the menu for the day, and each one tasted better than the last, reminding me how a good oyster may just be the perfect bite.  After savoring our oysters, we rounded out the meal with a halibut crudo {probably our fave dish of the night}, charred asparagus, and of course, their steak tartare which is hands down the best I've ever had.  I love the atmosphere of sitting at the bar at Walrus, watching the staff shuck oysters and prep the food, sipping on a cold drink and taking in the most beautiful and bright colors, and even though it's been 3+ years since our last visit here, it's even better than ever.  I'm so happy we finally got to celebrate all of the things {and yes, the bill at the end was totally worth it} and I can't wait to go back for the next celebration!

Dave Matthews Band

Before I get too deep into vacation pictures I wanted to share some pics from one of my most favorite nights recently, the Dave Matthews Band concert at Climate Pledge Arena a few weeks ago.  If you knew me at all in high school and college you know I was obsessed with DMB {to put it mildly}.  Susannah and I went to their concerts at the Gorge, brother and I hit up a few solo shows in Seattle, and their albums were on constant rotation throughout my teens and early 20's.  There's something about their music that just hits me in my gut and instantly brings me back to that time, so when I saw they were playing in Seattle {something they haven't done since 2006 as an opener for The Rolling Stones and 1996 as a headliner!} I knew I had to get us tickets.  We walked down to the arena {one of my favorite things about living in the city} and after dinner at The Sitting Room we headed over to the concert super early and super excited.  With no opener or real grand entrance the band jammed for 3 hours straight, playing some of my most favorite songs {Two Step & Crush}, some I had totally forgotten about {Seek Up & Stay or Leave}, and some new ones I had never heard of {if you ask me, the perfect DMB concert would be solely songs from the 90's but I guess you gotta take the new with the old!}.  I loved listening to his stories and rants in between songs {about getting out the vote for Patty Murray and heading down to Florida during the pandemic} and sitting there that night I was transported back to previous life and so grateful to be able to see one of my all time faves again.  Even Christian who wasn't a huge fan before the show was looking up old interviews of the band and watching concert videos online when we got home.  It was one of my most favorite nights in a long time and I'm so happy that my love for these guys is still so strong after so many years :) Now, let's hope it's not another 20+ years before they're back!

Monsoon {Birthday Dinner}

For my birthday dinner this year I decided to go with an old standby and favorite, Monsoon.  While we had takeout from them during the pandemic, we haven't actually been to the restaurant for years so my birthday seemed like the perfect opportunity to try them again.  After a Birthday FaceTime with Henry {who is now crawling!} we headed up to the hill early to walk around Volunteer Park {in whatever shade we could find} before heading over to the restaurant for our sidewalk table {that I knew would be perfectly shaded that time of day}.  After ordering some cocktails, it didn't take long to order up all of our faves, including Crispy Imperial Rolls, Drunken Chicken, and Catfish in a Claypot.  Though everything on the menu always looks divine, I can't help but keep coming back to these amazing dishes, and once again they did not disappoint.  We left the restaurant feeling full and happy and headed home for some fave shows paired with sparkling wine and the beautiful red roses C got me {which are still going strong!}.  It was a perfect birthday weekend - I couldn't have asked for anything more!

Happy {Anniversary} Friday

Happy Friday!! This week marks 15 years {!} since I moved to Seattle and I can hardly believe it.  In some ways I feel like I just got here, but in others it feels like I've been here forever.  To think back on how much this city has changed in that time, and how much I have changed in that time is pretty mind-blowing, and while there have been plenty ups and downs I feel like I'm right where I'm supposed to be at this moment and I wouldn't change a thing.  I have met some of my absolute best friends here, had the most amazing meals and adventures, and fell in love in one of the most gorgeous settings in the world {I mean, look at that view!}.  Though I often complain about how expensive this city is and how much it has changed, I know I am a very lucky girl to call this place my home and no matter what the future brings I don't regret that one bit.  Seattle will always have a place in my heart and I am forever grateful to it for what it has given to me and taught me over the past 15 years.

And now we're off to celebrate!  We're chasing some much needed warm sunshine and relaxation for an extra long weekend so I will be out for a few days.  Have a great weekend and I hope you find something to celebrate as well!  Cheers! :)

Sausage & Veggie Bowl

Lately I've been stocking up on lots veggies at the grocery store, not always having a plan of how I'm going to incorporate them in my meals but knowing more veggies is always a good idea.  I recently had some lingering in the fridge along with a few sausage links that needed to be cooked, so I roasted what veggies I had while cooking up the sausage on the stove and in no time I had a healthy, fresh, and delicious meal.  It's so easy to put this together with whatever veggies and protein you have lying around, and I've been making it over and over to use up what's about to go bad in the fridge.  A delicious and easy weeknight meal!

Sausage & Veggie Bowl

Ingredients
2-3 links sausage, casings removed
Several cups veggies {I like broccoli, sweet potato, bell pepper, and red onions}
Several handfuls Kale
Salt & Pepper
Squeeze of fresh lemon juice
Olive oil
Parmesan Cheese

Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400.  Add veggies to parchment lined baking sheet, mix well with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and bake until done {depends on veggies, but usually about 20 minutes}.
2. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in skillet on medium heat.  Cook sausages, breaking up as you go, until cooked through.
3. Add kale to sausage skillet with a splash of water.  Cover skillet and steam kale until done, just a few minutes.  Add splash of fresh lemon juice.
4. Add veggies and sausage/kale mixture to a bowl.  Sprinkle with salt & pepper and top with Parmesan, if using.

100 Days of Calm

Yesterday marked 100 days in a row of my current meditation journey.  I really got into meditation during my 2016 Costa Rica yoga retreat then made it a 2017 Resolution to start meditating daily, during which I made it to 202 consecutive days {!} of meditating before losing focus and deprioritizing it.  I've dabbled in different meditation apps over the past few years, but none I've loved as much as the Calm app {and none I've stuck with as long}.  100 days ago, I decided it was time to download the app again and get back to this calming, mindful habit that used to be a daily part of my routine and I'm so happy I did.  Meditation for me looks different day to day - it's often a 10 minute guided session in the morning before I start work, but can also be a 5-10 minute relaxation session right before bed that lulls me into a deep and restful sleep.  And somedays, I need an extra session in the afternoon just to get through the day! :)  The stress and anxiety of the past year have really gotten to us all and I've found that these daily exercises really help keep me centered, giving me that time to breathe and focus, and I'm committing to continuing this journey as long as it serves me.  There are a lot worse things I can think of than taking 10 minutes out of my day for a little mindfulness and self care :)

Fave Books of 2020

2020 was quite a doozy but one thing that remained constant is my love of reading.  Even without my daily bus commute for the majority of the year I still ended up reading an impressive 23 books in 2020, carving out time after work and before bed to get my daily pages in.  This year's books included a lot more non-fiction, including books from my work's Antiracist Book Club, and though it was hard to narrow it down to just a few, here are the books I read this year that I highly recommend you getting on your list ASAP.

I fell in love with Ruth Reichl when Maddie and I saw her speak back in 2019 and I finally got around to reading her book Save Me The Plums about her years as the final Editor in Chief at Gourmet Magazine.  This memoir is delightful, engaging, and solidifies my belief that I would love nothing more than sitting down with Ruth and a cup of tea and listening to her tell me stories about her life.

Feeling unimpressed {to say the least} with the 2020 occupants of The White House, I finally picked up my copy of Becoming, Michelle Obama's autobiography detailing her life starting out in the southside of Chicago all the way to her last days in The White House as First Lady.  It's an inspiring and beautifully written memoir that reminded me what it's like to have decency and humility in the First Family.  Such an exceptional woman.

The Great Believers follows a man through the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980's and intertwines the lives of the characters with those uncertain times and present day Paris.  It's engaging, heart wrenching, and an absolute page-turner, recently optioned for TV by Amy Poehler so make sure to read it before you watch!

I read a lot of antiracist books this year in my journey to becoming an antiracist, and though it was tough to choose just one, Ibram Kendi's How To Be An Antiracist breaks down the history of racism in America so eloquently, weaving an instruction manual of antiracism with his own history and life experiences.  It's a must read for anyone trying to breakdown the institutions of racism, and probably even more of a must read for those who think we already have.

I adore Fredrik Backman and Anxious People did not disappoint.  Set during an real estate open house, the thoughtfully written characters and humorous dialogue come together to make you laugh, cringe, and be thoroughly entertained.

Know My Name should be mandatory reading for everyone.  This memoir follows "Emily Doe", sexual assault victim in the infamous Stanford rape case and the years of her life before, during, and after the trial that was all over the headlines.  This moving account from the survivor's perspective shines a light on how our court system fails the most vulnerable in society and how through the worst circumstances someone can still come out of it feeling hopeful and strong.  Such a powerful and important book that I could not put down.

I squeezed in The Death of Vivek Oji on the last two days of the year {a super quick read} and am so glad I did.  It's a beautiful story not so much about death but about discovering who you are and acceptance by those you love.  If you're looking for a quick and dramatic read, look no further.

There were so many great reads this year and I'm already well under way on 2021's list!

Small Changes for a Better Planet

 The West Coast is on fire and once again the climate crisis is on everyone's radar, especially if you live where I do and keep waking up everyday to a thick later of smoke in the air, so overbearing and oppressive you have to stay inside and haven't had fresh air in days from fires that are states away.  While I'm one of the fortunate who doesn't have to worry about actual fires in my yard, I do worry about my health and my future and the future of this planet that is, contrary to what our president seems to think, the only one we have.  While I don't want to get political right now {let's save that until close to the election, shall we?} I do want to say that I'm worried about our planet and I'm worried about our future.  I'm no expert, but I know there are small, easy changes that we can all implement to make positive changes in our daily lives that will help our planet and ourselves {hey, you may just save some money with these ideas by reducing energy and waste!}.  Here are a few ideas I've been implementing in my daily routine over the past year or two that I encourage you to explore in your own lives.

Replace one time use dryer sheets with wool dryer balls.  I purchased these on Amazon over a year ago and they are still going strong {I use 3 per load and just leave them in the dryer when not in use}.  It drove me crazy how wasteful disposable dryer sheets are, and while yes, my clothes are a little static-y right out of the dryer, they are completely fine after a quick shake and I'm not putting several dryer sheets in the landfill weekly.  {side note - I'm also doing a lot less laundry in quarantine since I'm wearing a lot of the same sweatpants for days in a row, so I'm saving on energy from running the washer as well!}

Use as little plastic as possible.  Can I just say that I loathe single use plastics?  It's become a "thing" for me {just ask Christian} and I have been doing everything I can to avoid them at all costs.  Whenever I see Stasher bags on sale {Whole Foods had them at a great price a few weeks ago, and they're often included in Macy's sales}, I purchase a few - they are basically reusable, silicon Ziploc bags that can be refrigerated, frozen, and even microwaved, wash up nicely either by hand or dishwasher, and aren't being thrown out after every single use.  They come in fun colors and are so worth the investment.  I also purchased these dressing containers {for back when I actually went to an office and brought a lunch} as my previous containers leaked and I always had to wrap them in single use plastic to save anything else in my bag.  These are great for commutes and storage and totally leakproof!

Recycle the unavoidable plastic.  Single use plastic is unfortunately inevitable in our normal life - takeout bags, tortilla & bread bags, the plastic covering on a tub of salsa, the ridiculous amount of packaging in Trader Joe's produce, and the insane amount of plastic shipping bags from online orders {I'm looking at you, Nordstrom and Amazon}.  When I can't avoid plastic {though I've gotten good at forgoing the produce bags in the grocery store and seeking plastic alternatives whenever possible}, I keep them all in a bag in my kitchen and/or mud room and when that gets full I drop it off at Fred Meyer or any other drop off location since single use plastics are not accepted in our curbside recycling programs.  Plastic Film Recycling is an excellent source to tell you where to drop off your plastics and what will become of them.  I've also found this awesome program for recycling old contacts and individual contact cases because if you're like me and have to throw your contacts away daily, you will be amazed at how quickly those daily contact packets add up.  Now I can collect them in a box in my bathroom over a few months, then bring them to a local drop off location for recycling.

Make small, easy changes.  Making changes in your everyday life to be better to our planet isn't hard - you just sometimes have to get creative.  While I love having my Keurig coffee maker, I know that those regular single use cups are a huge problem so I converted to compostable cups that I buy in bulk at Costco.  They taste great and are much better for the environment.  I also always keep my reusable grocery bags in my car and before Covid, using the disposable bags at the store never even crossed my mind because I always had my own {now with stores banning your own bags it gets a little trickier but I plan to go back to reusable bags as soon as I can}.  I also have decanted my facial toner into a reusable spray bottle to avoid the disposable cotton pads I was using twice daily to apply the toner from the bottle.  Easy peasy!  And please do not use single use water bottles!!  There are so many great refillable options out there and thankfully we {in Washington} live in a place that has some pretty delicious tap water.

There are so many things we as human beings can do to make this planet just a little bit better.  Yes, it may seem like just one person making a change won't make a huge impact, but if we each make these changes and really put some thought into how we spend our money and how we consume resources in our day to day lives, I guarantee it's going to add up.  And doing good for the planet also makes you feel good, and once you start you'll be looking for more ways to recycle, reuse, compost, and avoid as much as possible.  Let's all try to do a little bit better to make sure there is a planet here for our kids and grandkids before it's too late.  It matters, and we can all do better.
